On 3 January 2025, the Institute of Legislation and Legal Policy under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan hosted a master class by Professor Jahongir Saidov of King’s College London on “Sectoral Diversity in International Trade: Experience of the Vienna Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods” with the participation of representatives of the Tashkent State University of Law and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

During the event, Professor J. Saidov noted the significant influence of the Vienna Convention on international contractual norms, which became the basis for the development of model contracts of the International Chamber of Commerce and the International Trade Centre.

Giving practical examples, the lecturer familiarised the participants in detail with the uniqueness of the Vienna Convention as a legal regime characterised by a minimalist approach and flexibility. In his view, this made the Vienna Convention an alternative to national legal systems.

The speaker also focused on international standards governing the conformity of goods with the requirements of the contract.

In conclusion, the Professor emphasised that the Vienna Convention, despite some limitations, remained one of the key instruments for regulating international trade. The Vienna Convention’s ability to adapt to different sectors makes it particularly useful for long-term contracts and global supply chains.

During the event, the audience received detailed answers from the Professor to questions concerning the application of the Convention in national legislation and its role in the drafting of the new Civil Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
